Luna D. – Teen Spotlight

Hello, I am Luna and I am 15 years old. I was adopted from China when I was 18 months old and I have albinism. Currently, I live and travel with my family between New Hampshire and Florida. I have been homeschooled my whole life and I am currently a high school sophomore in a full-time online charter school program.

Because I am homeschooled I feel very lucky that I have never had to face most of the social conflicts that other teens my age have in school and I like that I can make my own system of learning and make my accommodations. I also find that being homeschooled lets me explore more new activities and interests.

I have been interested in science and I constantly hope to work as an astrophysicist or possibly an engineer for NASA or SpaceX because I want to help figure out and learn why and how things work in space. Last year I went to SCIVIS (Space Camp for the blind and visually impaired)  I had an amazing time learning more about space with people who had the same interests and who were also visually impaired. The camp was also very helpful with making accommodations like having 3D models and tactical mats that you could feel it was so much fun and I plan to go back again this year.

In my free time, I love reading, crocheting, baking, and as of recently learning how to sail with my older sister. I started sailing this summer and I was very scared to go out alone for the first time as  I am still very new to the sport, so after some thinking, we decided to use a radio so she could talk to me and I could still be alone in the boat. Now this winter I plan to join a competitive sailing team with my sister.
